Canoeing near Quinta do Rio Dão: Because the river Dão near Quinta do Rio Dão makes part of the artificial lake of Aguieira, you will not notice any current. River up: After about 2 km river up you will pass the little village Granjal and after that there are no roads on both sides of the river and you will only see nature and all kinds of birds. The river becomes smaller and smaller and maybe you will reach a little granith dam, with an old abandoned water mill, but it could also be that you cross it without noticing, when the river is high. Notice that even in summer you are the only one on the river (probably). River down: First you will pass Santa Comba Dão and suddenly you are on a big lake, surrounded by forest. One could think of Sweden, but with an other climate. If you go a little further the River Criz is coming in at your right and further on at you left, the River Mondego. It's not difficult, but remember your way. We have all kinds of life jackets; please use them! Beside canoes we have also kayaks, a rowing boat and windsurf boards available. Canoes, kayaks and rowing boat can be used for free. 25 km canoe trip from Penacova to Coimbra on the river Mondego: O Pioneiro do Mondego organises canoe trips from Penacova to Coimbra, about 25 km river down in the magnificent Mondego Valley. It takes about 3 - 4 hours and is not difficult to do. First you go by own transport to the Tourist Information in Coimbra (3 quarters) where the organisation will pick you up at 10.00 a.m. and bring you by bus to Penacova. Here you will start at 11.00 a.m. For more information and reservations: O Pioneiro do Mondego tel./ fax (English spoken): (+351) 239 478 385
