Cicular walks, excellent signalized
For those who like nature walks in Portugal, the Caramulo is an ideal place. The south slope of the mountain ridge, is especially attractive. The highest point is the “Caramulinho”, at 1075 m. It is easy to reach from Abelenda Bike Rental, it takes only 45 minutes by car to get there.
There are 6 circular walks in the southern part of the Serra do Caramulo, all thematic and very different from each other. From those seven walks we will describe two: The Rota dos Laranjais (Route of the orange trees, 7,5 km, about 3,5 hour walk) and the Rota dos Caleiros (Route of the water ducts, 8,2 km, about 4 hours walking).
We have information of walks in other mountain areas as well, see:
walking in the Serra da Estrela »
walking in the Serra do Bussaco »
walking in the Serra do Açor »
These walks are all close to Abelenda Bike Rental and very beautiful, but the walks in the Serra do Caramulo, as described here below, are very special.
Rota dos Laranjais (Route of the Orange Groves)
This course runs along the lower part of the slope, between 300 and 500 meters) where orange groves and traditionally cultivated terraces are combined with woodland, brooks, traditional villages and a view of Besteiros Valley. The walk is 7,5 km. long (a 3 to 3,5 hour´s walk).
Rota dos Caleiros (Route of the Water pipes)
This route begins at the foot of the Caramulinho, is 8,2 km long (three-and- a -half hours) and runs at an altitude between 850 and 1000 m. High up in the Caramulo the landscape is completely different from the previous route. Here it is dominated by imposing rock formations and panoramic views. Roman paths cross a vegetation with many rare species. A climb of another 75 meters brings you to the top and a splendid view of the whole area.
